The Virtual "Wild West!"

Tuesday evening's Frontline will air "Growing Up Online." Technology and its online influence is impacting our society, especially our children, in ways none of us can imagine. I look forward to watching and commenting on it. More information can be found:

This was an excellent show. It was infomative, but not over the top. I thought the main point, and I'm paraphrasing, regarding that the internet and the virtual world are here to stay was on target. Not a whole lot of answers, but for an an adult unfamiliar with the virtual world this video is a great starting point. The education piece was also illuminating. That is why we have invested thousands of dollars towards interactive technology.

I also found the video wonderful. A lot of great information for parents and educators. What kept running through my mind as I was watching it was balance. It is like anything our kids live with - we need to teach them how to balance it. If we are too strick and limiting then kids are going to sneak around and go behind our backs. If we are too open and don't monitor at all they will over-indulge. We need to embrace that this is part of society and the way our kids commuicate and express themselves. The key however, is that it is a PART and we need to teach our kids how to keep this in balance.

I certainly agree about balance. I am just now watching the piece - I'm finding it a bit skewed towards the dark side - which is useful - but not so much on the positive side of what kids are doing online - and there's lots to be proud about.

But I do want kids to be safe and to be wise and to look after one another.
